Read the manual and buy exactly what it specifies (period). I have a KTM 450 Exc and read up on this same issue. For mine it is the Motorex 20w50 since i live in so cal. Although manufacturers may have the same viscosity (ex 10w40), there are additives like graphite that are added for optimal engine wear based on your engi
The KTM 390 Adventure has a 4650 mile / 7500 km or annual minor service interval, and a 9300 mile / 15000 km major service interval. At the minor service, change the oil and air filter, and run over the list of checks for leaks, wear, and degraded materials (e.g. rubber hoses).
Feb 4, 2004. Oddometer: 1,590. Location: Eastern YahooLand. Markozero, I rode a dual sport ride at the last of October last year in Colorado and Utah with a bunch of "dual sport" bikers (think 400+ pound porkers Vs. my 250 pound 500). Between 55 and 70 there is almost zero vibration on my 500.
I have been doing research for my next enduro. I know there is about 1.5 liters in the EXC 450/530. Don't know.what the 690 holds. I have plans for the TAT next summer. My friend did the second leg this past week on his 530 EXC. He said the oil capacity was the only kink in the armour. I just wondered because the 690 seems to be more street
KTM 1190advR said: ↑. From what I know KTM recommends 10w-60 if you live/drive regularly in ambient temps above 30 deg Celsius. It maintains lubrication at higher temps. 10w-50 provides poor lubrication at very high engine temps and wear out much faster. This is misleading and completely unsubstantiated advice.

A 450 EXC is a great enduro/woods bike but not a good candidate for a dual sport that will do any amount of "street" mileage. Been there, done that, sold my '04 after about 8 months. I now have an XR650 for the dual sport role, much more enjoyable on extended road trips. And a KTM 2 stroke for serious woods riding.
2016 350 xcfw here. Never had valves adjusted, never opened the engine and was running great at 319 hours. Only clean air filters and oil changes. Plenty of over-extended oil change intervals have occurred as well. I swear, I could have put another 100 hours on it before my top-end.
